I think the most exciting IoT trend to watch out for in 2018 is the use of Blockchain technology to accelerate transactions, ensure trust, and reduce costs. The Internet of Things, (IoT), is such and exciting yet complex ecosystem. If you’ve been to any conferences this year you’ve witnessed IoT discussions center-stage, and security concerns paired with this next wave of innovation humanizing every object in our lives. The number and variety of IoT solutions has exploded as industry has evolved providing sensing, processing, storage, and communication. We know that IoT is pregnant with promises to potentiate and expand business processes, providing speed to innovation and growth. However with billions of connected devices, security concerns are mission critical for risk mitigation. Many experts believe that Blockchain technology is the missing link to ameliorate privacy, security and reliability challenges in the IoT. Blockchain and IoT were the hottest pair on-stage even last week while I was speaking at SAP’s Leonardo Live conference in Chicago. It appears that Blockchain just might be the magic wand the IoT industry can waive to address serious security consideration, (think DDos attacks, and Mirai).
In short, blockchain technology can be employed to trace billions of connected devices, process transactions and offer a huge savings to IoT industry manufacturers. This is a decentralized approach eliminating single points of failure, creating quite a buoyant ecosystem for devices to run on. Harnessing the power of cryptographic algorithms, Blockchains make consumer data private, hence the increase in trust and reliable authentication. Blockchain ledgers are tamper-proof, and safe from malicious actors because the data does not exist in any single location. Blockchain has already proven it’s viability in the financial services vertical through cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. The removal of third party brokers through providing secure peer-to-peer transactions is certainly disrupting another industry…FinTech.
I think the most exciting trend for IoT in 2018 is the advancement in the “Smart Clothing & Devices” as well as products used in “Smart Homes” – I very much believe that they will make a positive impact in the world, and make life more efficient and connected – as long as the proper protocol, security and thought go into the human factor element and risk.
