17 Experts Tell The Most Exciting IoT Trends to Watch for in 2018

Amit

Needless to say, IoT is one of the most talked about technologies in 2017. Unlike most other technologies, IoT has a visible impact on various industries and business functionings in just a matter of few years

According to Statista, the global IoT market is forecast to be valued at more than 1.7 trillion U.S. dollars.

As a certified Google Developer Agency and reputed IoT Application Development Company, team TechJini asked 17 popular industry experts the below question-

“What According To You Is The Most Exciting IoT Trend To Watch For In 2018?”

What follows are their answers for it…

1. Most exciting IoT trend to watch out for in 2018 is the use of Blockchain technology to accelerate transactions, ensure trust, and reduce costs.

Theodora LauTamara McCleary

I think the most exciting IoT trend to watch out for in 2018 is the use of Blockchain technology to accelerate transactions, ensure trust, and reduce costs. The Internet of Things, (IoT), is such and exciting yet complex ecosystem. If you’ve been to any conferences this year you’ve witnessed IoT discussions center-stage, and security concerns paired with this next wave of innovation humanizing every object in our lives. The number and variety of IoT solutions has exploded as industry has evolved providing sensing, processing, storage, and communication. We know that IoT is pregnant with promises to potentiate and expand business processes, providing speed to innovation and growth. However with billions of connected devices, security concerns are mission critical for risk mitigation. Many experts believe that Blockchain technology is the missing link to ameliorate privacy, security and reliability challenges in the IoT. Blockchain and IoT were the hottest pair on-stage even last week while I was speaking at SAP’s Leonardo Live conference in Chicago. It appears that Blockchain just might be the magic wand the IoT industry can waive to address serious security consideration, (think DDos attacks, and Mirai).

In short, blockchain technology can be employed to trace billions of connected devices, process transactions and offer a huge savings to IoT industry manufacturers. This is a decentralized approach eliminating single points of failure, creating quite a buoyant ecosystem for devices to run on. Harnessing the power of cryptographic algorithms, Blockchains make consumer data private, hence the increase in trust and reliable authentication. Blockchain ledgers are tamper-proof, and safe from malicious actors because the data does not exist in any single location. Blockchain has already proven it’s viability in the financial services vertical through cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. The removal of third party brokers through providing secure peer-to-peer transactions is certainly disrupting another industry…FinTech.

11. Integration of Artificial Intelligence techniques like Deep Learning for an improved IoT experience is the key

Manjeet RegeManjeet Rege

Integration of Artificial Intelligence techniques like Deep Learning for an improved IoT experience is the key. Traditionally, in IoT, the predictive analytics and/or preventive maintenance of devices has been done by analyzing the data in the cloud. However, that may not always be possible with large amounts as well as streaming data arriving from the edge devices. Making edge devices smarter will be critical. The prediction rules may be discovered a priori in the cloud and these lightweight rules can be deployed on the edge devices. Secondly, Deep Learning techniques have been known to require lots of training data which may act as a constraint for certain industry verticals. Advancement in Deep Learning algorithms in this regard such as the recent “capsule” networks will make IoT application easier.

Dr. Manjeet Rege, Associate Professor of Graduate Programs of Software at the University of St. Thomas

12. 2018 will provide a big leap forward towards realizing the promises of IoT

Theodora LauDaniel Elizalde

“The most exciting IoT trend for 2018 is companies starting to take a step back and focusing on their IoT product strategy as opposed to just jumping on the latest technology trend. Companies large and small realize IoT has big potential, but they are also realizing how complex it is. Technology trends are interesting for sure, but by themselves they don’t guarantee the success of a product or company. If this trend continues, 2018 will provide a big leap forward towards realizing the promises of IoT.”

Daniel Elizalde, Founder of TechProductManagement

15. We should look at 2018 in all of these exponentially-growing technologies — artificial intelligence, robotics, nanomaterials, biotech, bioinformatics, quantum computing, Internet of everything

Theodora LauRaj Kosaraju

The Internet of Things represents an emerging reality where everyday objects and devices are connected to the Internet, most likely wirelessly, and can communicate with one another at some intelligent level. It’s here today in the devices, sensors, cloud infrastructure, data and business intelligence tools you are already using. We should look at 2018 in all of these exponentially-growing technologies — artificial intelligence, robotics, nanomaterials, biotech, bioinformatics, quantum computing, Internet of everything — these files that are going to transform everything we have. However, it is not just an IT industry phenomenon. PayPal, Netflix, Skype and Uber were also once dismissed as toys, and in recent years, the number of technologies in the toy phase has risen sharply: 3D printers, digital cash, self-driving cars, smartwatches, Internet TV, 3D goggles, robots, smart clothing, massively open online courses (MOOCs), drones, expert systems, do-it-yourself medical tests, the quantified self, artificial intelligence and more. It is just the beginning.
